Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect up to 20% of patients and can lead to adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is a safe, cost-effective, and underutilized intervention that reduces the risk and severity of PMADs, with benefits comparable to psychotherapy. Despite evidence, fewer than 15% of perinatal individuals meet MVPA recommendations due to safety concerns, limited guidance, and social barriers. Obstetrical care providers can reduce this gap by offering evidence-based counselling and using tools like the Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy and Postpartum to support safe participation during the perinatal period, improving mental health outcomes.
